Swedish Pastry Scissors 193 Years Old

I love researching the pieces that I find, but was blown away to learn that this sweet piece was made in 1829.

How do I know? Look for the photo that shows the maker's marks. You'll see the trefoil mark for Sweden, an "S" that in Sweden indicates 800 silver, and finally the imprint "Y3". That's the giveaway, for that mark in Swedish silver history indicates these tongs were made in 1829.

It's tougher to know with certainty the maker of this piece. The city mark is blurred, and the maker's mark is damaged by use, which interrupted the legibility of the mark.

    The detail:
    Length: 5.5"
    Width: 2"
    Weight: 41 grams
Discernible Markings: The mark for Sweden, the "S" mark for 800 silver, the Y3 mark for the year 1829. [http://www.silvercollection.it/DICTIONARYEUHALLMARKSWEDEN.HTML]

A word of caution...sometimes sellers advertise these pieces as 800 silver when they are silver plate or possibly Alpaca silver, which contains no sterling. Be sure that you can see the mark.

Since it's solid 800 silver, the standard for continental silver, you don't have to worry about the finish wearing off with use. A simple polish removes any accumulating tarnish. (I prefer Hagerty Silversmith's wash with a tarnish preventative. Avoid using silver dips; they'll remove the lovely patina that gathers in the crevices to enhance the detail of these pieces.)

    No monogram.

Commensurate with age, the condition is very good to excellent.
