These sweet antique German Silver sugar tongs are a lovely addition to any table. I love to bring these out with after-dinner coffee... I love giving pieces like this one as fun shower or hostess gifts with a note reflecting on all of the parties that century old pieces have seen. I also love hanging pieces like these on mustard pots that I've repurposed for sugar cube pots, to the delight of my guests...coffee doesn't get better than this! (See NBJ877)
The West German 835 silver tongs: ornate, pierced--also called reticulated, (see the cutwork detail on both the tip and the handle) with rose floral accents, hallmarked 835, fashioned after those by Albert Bodemer (ALBO), of Germany which were made before the war. (These are post-war creations due to the mark.)
Dimensions: 3" long and about 5/8" at the widest point
Opening: 1 14"
Weight: 12 grams
Hallmark: 835; W Germany
The antique German 800 silver tongs: also ornate, but crowned with a sweet angel at the top of both sides, which at first made me wonder if these might be Italian. (The Italians call the angel a putti.) The marks confirm an older German mark, so these date closer to the turn of the century and are antique.
Dimensions: 2 7/8" long and about 5/8" at the widest point
Opening: 5/8"
Weight: 12 grams
Hallmark: 800; the German crescent and crown
Beautiful condition with surface wear consistent with age. You will notice the rose on the handle of the West German tongs. The story of the Hildesheim Rose, after which this piece is patterned, delights me. The oldest known rose alive today, it has withstood wars and time. Rising 69 feet at the Hildesheim Cathedral, it's an inspirational point for the German nation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand-year_RoseA word of caution...some sellers advertise these pieces as 800 silver when they are silver plate. Be sure that you can see the mark.
Since it's solid 835 silver, you don't have to worry about the finish wearing off with use. A simple polish removes any accumulating tarnish. (I prefer Hagerty Silversmith's wash with a tarnish preventative. Avoid using silver dips; they'll remove the lovely patina that gathers in the crevices to enhance the detail of these pieces.)
No monogram.
Commensurate with age, the condition is very good to excellent.
