The first gold locket that grabbed my heart was made by Hayward.
Hayward made beautiful lockets in its day, oh that this craftsmanship still existed! This is a prime example...beautifully etched, delightfully detailed, with 12K gold filled applications. This lovely locket was easy to date due to the Etruscan flourishes that make it both so rare and so beautiful. The application of the delicately soldered roping and bead work puts this locket solidly in the Etruscan camp. However, I can't decide which side I favor, because the simplicity of the back of this piece is quite beautiful to me, as well. The back displays the characteristic pinstripe design of Walter E. Hayward, a Massachusetts based jeweler, whose company made this locket in the 1800s. I'd definitely be tempted to wear this one both ways.
The Hayward Company in Attleboro, Massachusetts -the city once known as "The jewelry capital of the world," was begun in 1851. Known for its excellence in craftsmanship in both gold and gold filled pieces, Hayward lockets are highly, highly collectible.
Like other gold filled pieces, this one has stood the test of time. In lovely condition. This must have been a treasured keepsake as it reveals very little wear. Truly beautiful and unique. Some of the images show the addition of a little pearl on a god filled wire. I can add that bit of whimsy, too, if you'd like.

*As a point of information, always seek gold filled jewelry over gold plated pieces. Gold filled items are legally required to have a heavier coating of 12K or 14K gold, 5% or 1/20 gold by weight, typically bonded over another material, in our case jeweler's brass, which is 90% copper and 10% zinc, both safe metals. Gold filled items stand the test of time; gold plated items will not endure.
~ I can put images within the locket for you. If you'd like that option, Please convo me for the time needed to complete your order. You'll need to send a jpeg of your images. Original jpegs give the best results. Don't worry about the size of the image; I can adjust it at my end.
~ I can put this on other chains or other lengths, per your preference. I can create a linked chain without delay. A longer gold filled box chain would take extra time.
