  • Details
Some Nippon pieces are just exceptionally beautiful.

These darling glazed porcelain salt cellars are over 100 years old. Note the detailed hand-painting and embellishments around the rims. So beautiful. They were fashioned by Nippon, and I found the information about the hallmark so interesting. This set includes five individual salts.

A little history: "The Japanese used "Nippon," which was the English equivalent of the Japanese word for Japan. It was not until 1921 that the United States changed the law so that pieces had to be marked "Japan," not "Nippon." These laws make it easy for today's collectors to identify Nippon china. The word "Nippon" often appears with other marks that identify the maker. This maker was Maruki, from 1912.

“Maruki Symbol Hand Painted Nippon”, since 1912. We have only encountered this in blue. Note how similar it looks to the Spoke mark above. The lines... have more curved parallel lines with a straight line going down the middle. Van Patten’s #180."

    Priced per set.

Salt cellars make a great wedding gift or special piece for any silver lover, especially now as flavored salts grace many foodie tables. My favorite salt for these cellars is the flaky tasty salt made by Maldon. https://www.amazon.com/Maldon-Sea-Salt-Flakes-ounce/dp/B00017028M
