    The longer nautical scoop:
This Dutch scoop stumped me for a bit. A little digging proved that this scoop was a real find. H. Hooijkaas b.v. Schoonhovense Zilverfabriek made this piece. The company began in 1875 and continued until 1978. I magnified the little sword eight times to show its form, typical of Dutch work. Sources I've read put this piece to be about 80-100 years old.

    Dimensions: 4 3/4 inches x 1 5/8 inches
    Weight: 20 grams
Markings: sword; HH in a rectangle; 835, which means 835/1000 silver content.
I have guessed at the age, as this piece is similar to others I own from this period.

The smaller, wider, heavier windmill scoop, possibly a tea caddy:
This Dutch scoop is equally delightful, and a little shorter. This sweet piece also took a bit of digging. When I saw the sword on the back, I knew I had Dutch silver, not silver plate, but swords differ on metal purity. If you look closely to the right of the milkmaid, you'll see a lion passant stamped there with a number 2 beneath him. To the Dutch, that little lion and number indicate a minimum of 833/1000 silver purity. The windmill blades are moveable.

    Dimensions: 3 3/8 inches x 2 1/4 inches
Markings: a partial "sword" on the back and a lion passant clearly marked on the front
    Weight: 25 grams

A word of caution...some sellers advertise these pieces as silver when they are silver plate. Be sure that you can see the mark!

Since it's solid silver, you don't have to worry about the finish wearing off with use. A simple polish removes any accumulating tarnish. (I prefer Hagerty Silversmith's wash with a tarnish preventative. Avoid using silver dips; they'll remove the lovely patina that gathers in the crevices to enhance the detail of these pieces.)

    No monogram.

Commensurate with age, the condition is excellent.
