European elegance. Think Downton Abbey, but think it in German...with Dutch art. Think German master silversmiths... Sweet pieces like this one are getting rarer for they bespeak a more gentile time when people dined together formally. We don't do much formal dining at my house, either; well, there are the holidays, but I use pieces like this one often to the amusement and delight of all of my friends. I love gifting these to new brides with a note about the history, always cherished.

Notice the milkmaid carrying her buckets at the end of the handle. Within the paddle are highly defined images of a windmill nestled near a building, all surrounded with decorative flourishes. Hallmarked "J K" with swan for Johann Siegmund Kurz & Co, a famous silversmith from Hanau who began silversmithing in the 1870s. Google his name and you will find just a few of his pieces, and you will find them far more expensive, as well. Love this sweet piece!

    The server: 5 1/8" long (30cm) x 1 3/8 " wide (38mm)
    The paddle portion: 1 3/8" wide x 1 7/8" long.
Hallmarks: J Swan K; Moon; Crown; 800: proudly branded, think Gucci.
    Weight: 22.6 grams
Free of dents, dings, monograms, minimal scratches.
Commensurate with age, the condition is excellent.

A word of caution...many sellers advertise these pieces as 800 silver when they are silver plate. Be sure that you can see the mark.

Since it's solid 800 silver, the standard for German silver, you don't have to worry about the finish wearing off with use. A simple polish removes any accumulating tarnish. (I prefer Hagerty Silversmith's wash with a tarnish preventative. Avoid using silver dips; they'll remove the lovely patina that gathers in the crevices to enhance the detail of these pieces.)
