Gorgeous German Felisch & Kirchheim 800 Silver Sugar Tongs ~835 Silver ~ Silver Sugar Tongs ~ Antique Silver

$60.99

  • Details
I have two sweet antique German 835 Silver sugar tongs, ornate, pierced--also called reticulated, (see the cutwork detail on both the tip and the handle) with rose floral accents, both hallmarked 835, one with the mark for Felisch & Kirchheim of West Germany, and one with the mark of Albert Bodemer, of Germany, with Bodemer's being the earlier design. I love giving pieces like this one as fun shower or hostess gifts with a note reflecting on all of the parties that century old pieces have seen. I also love hanging pieces like these on mustard pots that I've repurposed for sugar cube pots, to the delight of my guests...coffee doesn't get better than this! (See NBJ877)

The Felisch & Kirchheim tongs: 3 " long and about 5/8" at the widest point
    Opening: 1 14"
    Weight: 17 grams
Hallmarks: 835 F in a circle, the mark of Felisch & Kirchheim, W. Germany

Beautiful condition with surface wear consistent with age. You will notice the rose on the handle and within the tip design. The story of the Hildesheim Rose, after which this piece is patterned, delights me. The oldest known rose alive today, it has withstood wars and time. Rising 69 feet at the Hildesheim Cathedral, it's an inspirational point for the German nation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand-year_Rose

A word of caution...some sellers advertise these pieces as 800 silver when they are silver plate or possibly Alpaca silver, which contains no sterling. Be sure that you can see the mark.

Since it's solid 835 silver, you don't have to worry about the finish wearing off with use. A simple polish removes any accumulating tarnish. (I prefer Hagerty Silversmith's wash with a tarnish preventative. Avoid using silver dips; they'll remove the lovely patina that gathers in the crevices to enhance the detail of these pieces.)

    No monogram.

Commensurate with age, the condition is very good to excellent.
